Sales-Tax / VAT-GST Nexus Threshold Checker

Two checks in one: enter your per-state US sales to see where economic nexus is likely triggered (California, New York, Texas, New Jersey verified to the state DOR), or check VAT/GST as a non-established seller into the UK or Ireland — where the threshold that actually applies to you is often zero, not the headline domestic figure.

Your US position

Physical presence (office, employee, or inventory — including Amazon FBA) creates nexus on its own, separate from these dollar thresholds.

Per-state sales

Add a row per state. Enter gross sales of tangible personal property delivered into that state and the number of separate transactions. Marketplace sales generally still count toward your own threshold.

Workflow

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick the market: US state economic nexus, or international VAT/GST as a non-established seller.
  2. 2 For the US tab, add a row per state with your gross sales and transaction count; for the international tab, answer whether you are established there and what you supply.
  3. 3 Read the decision-first verdict: which jurisdictions likely trigger a registration obligation, which are watch items, and what to verify before registering.
  4. 4 Save the report as a PDF, copy the summary, or open the cited official source for each number.

Why this matters

The headline VAT and sales-tax thresholds are the wrong number for most cross-border founders. A UK or Irish non-established seller has an effectively zero registration threshold, not £90,000 or €85,000. In the US, each state measures nexus differently — California and Texas on sales alone, New York on sales AND transactions, New Jersey on sales OR transactions — over different lookback windows, and marketplace sales usually still count toward your own threshold. This tool checks the threshold that actually applies, cites the official source for every number, and flags anything fact-specific for you to confirm rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Which US states does this tool verify?

California, New York, Texas, and New Jersey are verified to the official state Department of Revenue page as of June 2026. For any other state the tool returns a "verify on that state's DOR" to-do rather than a number — it never assumes the common "$100k or 200 transactions" default applies.

I am under the £90,000 UK VAT threshold — am I safe?

Not necessarily. The £90,000 figure is the threshold for businesses ESTABLISHED in the UK. As a non-established taxable person (NETP) you must register regardless of turnover — HMRC Schedule 1A gives NETPs no registration threshold. Ireland applies a nil threshold to non-established persons "irrespective of turnover" too.

Do marketplace (Amazon/eBay) sales count toward my threshold?

Generally yes — marketplace sales usually still count toward your own economic-nexus threshold even when the marketplace collects and remits the tax. The exact treatment varies by state, so the tool flags it as something to confirm rather than a hardcoded rule.

Is this tax or legal advice?

No. It is general information and a compliance-exposure estimate. It does not file anything, draft any document, or decide a fact-specific eligibility question. Thresholds change — confirm with the relevant tax authority or a qualified advisor before you register. (IRS Circular 230 / UPL boundary.)
